Former Vikings Love Seattle
This comic concept brought to you by longtime friend of the comic and now Patron of the comic, James Pogatshnik! Go listen to Norse Code.
James brought to my attention the long and storied history of Vikings choosing to go west. Specifically, the Pacific Northwest. It’s like they want to see the ocean but also still have miserable winter weather.
Adrian Peterson’s post-disgrace tour of multiple teams to wind down his career briefly included Seattle at the very end.
Percy Harvin is probably best known for having migraines. While he was a Viking far longer than he was a Seahawk, he ran back a kick in the Super Bowl that year and now he’s permanently a Seahawks to me. He was part of a trio of former Vikings on that 2013 Seahawks team, the others being Sidney Rice and Tavaris Jackson.
I had no idea John Randle played in Seattle, he’s always been a pure Viking to me. But he was there for a few years, and even went to the Pro Bowl as a Seahawk.
Same with Warren Moon. Moon actually played for a number of teams, but to me he’s always been an Oiler.
Then we have notorious draft bust Laquon Treadwell. Fun fact about Treadwell: he’s clearly going for the NFL team played for record. Since the Vikigns cut him, Treadwell has gone – Falcons – Jaguars – Patriots – Cardinals – Seahawks – Ravens – Colts. It is important to know he was a practice squad guy for all these teams. I dunno what it is, but the poor guy just ain’t got it.
There is also one half of the Williams Wall, the briefly very cool defensive line from the 2000’s. Kevin Williams toiled in Seattle for their Super Bowl loss in 2014 before disappearing.
Funnily enough, there is also a guy who started in Seattle, became a Viking, then ran back home. Shaquill Griffin left Seattle and took a tour of the NFL, going to the Jaguars, Texans, Panthers, and then Vikings before re-signing with Seattle in June of this year. You may know Shaquill as the brother of the guy with no hand, Shaquem Griffin.
Lastly, we have the two kickers. Ryan Longwell (what a great name for a kicker) played for the Packers for a while, then played for the Vikings for half a decade, then went to Seattle to replace an injured Hauschka and retired. Blair Walsh? He might have never actually been a Viking. He was a Seahawks sleeper agent who put on the Purple for several years before the deep spy operation was activated during the 2015 season playoffs, when Walsh would shank an easy game-winning field goal against Seattle in the waning seconds.
I wanna know who the heck keeps throwing the fish!
DAVE, as fellow not Oregon but in Portland (area), how do you really feel about Seattle (I didn’t know you were in Portland until recently [I’ve seen all the comics but I didn’t read all the comments till halfway through college. I started following in highschool. Feel old yet? I graduated uni half a decade ago. Now I do. I owned myself typing this comment. I should delete this while I’m ahead but you always struck a similar nerve that Jon Bois did, and to a lesser extent, Bill Simmons back when he would write instead of shmooze on podcasts (I still sometimes listen).
But yeah as I was saying Seattle, what gives?
Blair Walsh can go eat a bowl of flaming dicks and choke to death on the final dick.
lol at Switch 2!
I did not know Carl Eller (member of the purple people eaters of the 70s) ended his career on the early Hawks teams like Franco Harris did.
There’s two Rs in Tarvaris, Dave.
This is exactly why I tell people I’m a part-time Seahawks fan. Ever since I was little, my favorite players have inevitably ended up on the Seahawks. I also went to look at UW and Seattle for grad school after doing my undergrad at UMN and was really surprised at how the two cities felt like cultural siblings. I never felt out of place there. There’s even a couple of Minnesota bars there too….strange stuff!
Shaquill’s Stump Removal is SO good.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
(OK I know that was an easy one, but I can’t stop thinking about it)
First Seahawks coach came over from the Vikings.
And of course there was the Hutch/Burleson poison pill war…
Mike Tice did the opposite, he played for the Seahawks before playing and later coaching for the Vikings.
Bert Rose was the first general manager of the Vikings. He was an alum of the University of Washington, whose colors are purple and gold. Rose chose those colors for the Vikings.
Not including Nate Burleson on this list is criminal considering the history behind it.
Most football fans old enough remember the poison pill contract the Vikings signed all-pro guard Steve Hutchinson to as a way to sort of steal him from the Seahawks when they put a weak tag on him intending to match any contract. But after the Vikings pulled that, the Seahawks decided to get revenge by doing the exact same thing to the Vikings the next time they had a chance when the Vikings did the same thing with one of their big FAs.
And they chose to do that with Nate Burleson. Coming off a 30 catch 328 yard season.
lol
I was hoping for Gary Zimmerman nod, even Reggie White couldn’t simmer the Zimmer.
Never mind, I should have read the whole thing.
There really were high amount of ex-Vikings going to Seattle for some reason. Maybe after the next season, we’ll get a reverse with Russell Wilson going to Minny. Likely have a revival only for reality to hit the Vikings hard in the postseason harder than an isekai truck.
