Josh Gordon Meets Bill Belichick
Well all got to enjoy the schadenfreude of the Pats losing for like a day and then they go and get Josh Gordon for a measley 5th rounder and the hate came flooding back in. Nobody else could offer a 5th? Okay then.
Then I got to thinking about it a bit more and there is far from any guarantee Josh Gordon is gonna do anything. I think because of the “Pats way” mystique of turning around older troublemakers into productive teammate studs we kinda forgot that doesn’t actually happen all that often. Randy Moss was one high profile guy who worked out. But what about Chad Ochocinco? There is a large swath of guys the Pats picked up to try that didn’t quite work out.
Add to this that most of the hype around Josh Gordon is honestly kind of overrated at this point. We still remember his last fairly full season when he was real good, but it was like 5 years ago. Almost all the Josh Gordon love is for Josh Gordon’s potential. What he could be. But for most of his career that’s all he is. I’m all for legalizing the reefer but Gordon’s got problems far beyond just being your average dude who enjoys a puff now and then. From what I hear and suspect most players probably smoke to a small degree. Gordon has legit issues. They’ve been the bane of his existence for years. Belichick loves to pick up dudes to see if they can be used. If they can’t, or they prove to be any sort of hassle, they get let go. I remember Jamie Collins.
So before we despair that the Pats just picked up another guy who is suddenly now going to be a model citizen “because Patriots” let’s actually wait a bit and see if that is what happens. The Pats will reach the deep playoffs regardless, whether Gordon is a reason why is far from guaranteed.
Remember when Josh Gordon got drafted 6 years ago?

The Browns in that timespan drafted 13 1st round players.
He outlived all of the ones from 2012-2016. In that timeframe, 3 Patriots 1st rounders ended up in New England (Mingo, Shelton, Coleman)
Josh Gordon was at one point the longest tenured browns player, God the browns suck.
To be fair, he was suspended a great deal of that. So him being the Browns “longest tenured” player was only because he didn’t actually play for the Browns during a good portion of that time. Typing that and then reading it back sounds incredibly depressing. I’m so sorry Browns fans.

Yep Gordon screwed himself over so much, he could’ve been a journeyman WR people kept taking a chance on by now.

This whole off-season it felt like Bellicheck was submarining the roster to prove a point to Brady (like you can’t do this without me). I wonder if Bob Kraft did this to make Brady happy or Bellicheck was too competitive to prove his point longer than a few games.

The trade is even worse now, the Browns are giving the Pats a 7th round pick along with Gordon

A lot of these guys fail with the Patriots because they are hoping to squeeze a little bit more out of them for virtually no cost, and it turns out they have nothing left (Reggie Wayne, Eric Decker).
Ochocinco (and some others) failed because they were too dumb to learn the offense.
Moss is a legit HoF talent and football savant (Belichick claims he is one of the smartest players he ever coached) and he lasted three+ years before he started complaining about getting paid, and at that point his diminishing skills didn’t outweigh the aggravation so off he went. Moss did very little after leaving the Pats, so they wrung about all there was from him.
After not playing for most of 4 seasons, it remains to be seen what Gordon has left.
OK, 2 minutes to go in the 4th, Mayfield has led the Browns to a lead. Is this the win we’ve all been waiting for? Will this be tomorrow’s Checkdown? Will Baker ever look back? Will the Browns completely Browns this up?

Chad Ochocinco was on the tail end of his career physically. Josh Gordon is still in his prime and as long as the long layoff changed something he will be dominate when on the field
