The Jets Must Suffer
Sometimes I wonder what the New York Jets did to anger God.
The Jets currently have the longest playoff drought in the NFL, at 15 years. Meanwhile, their division rival and league juggernaut Patriots are not only back in the playoffs, but are playing for the franchise’s 7th Super Bowl with their 3rd overall pick franchise QB. They had a drought that was less than a decade. Those fans didn’t have to wait long at all to experience meaningful football.
On the other side, the Seahawks are being led by their own 3rd overall pick QB, except that QB was who the Jets picked in 2018. Sam Darnold was just another in a line of saviors of the franchise for the Jets that failed to save the franchise. The Jets cannot be saved. The Jets are eternally damned. The most famous thing Sam Darnold did for the Jets was catch Mono and see ghosts.
I assume all Jets fans are rooting for the Seahawks and Sam to annihilate the Patriots and arent terribly bitter about Sam himself. If you are a Jets fan, you have to understand that Sam was likely never the real problem; the Jets are the problem. It took Sam years of toiling away as a backup to even regain some dignity, and really not until this year has he managed to actually shake off most of the memes. I’ll probably root for Daniel Jones if he ever ends up in the same position Darnold is in.

Just
End
The
Suffering
Jets, Jets, Jets!
Seinfeld: So what’s the deal with Jets being QB graveyard? Also Belichick got snubbed.

Good for Sam, never got a fair shake with Adam Gase. Good for Vrabel who the Titans screwed over and chose the wrong side of that power struggle. Otherwise, eh on the actual matchup, I just hope it’s close and fun but rooting for the Seahawks. The frustrating thing is that the AFC East division is the Patriots to lose again. Miami is meh with new coach and no plan at QB for the moment. The Jets are the Jets. Those two teams are self-explanatory and are 2-3 years from competing, I think, even if offseason decisions go well.
The Bills though, oh the Bills. they have a QB but good lord what in the actual hell are they doing… I cannot see that team maintaining success with the dysfunction they have right now. Fire the HC to change the culture and get over the hump only to promote from within and keep the staff, just now with less experience? Calling out players you picked high as a problem in press conferences. It’s a rough look. It could go well and I could be wrong but morale for that team has to be at an all-time low. In fact, I hope I’m wrong because football moose is fun to watch and they have a great fanbase overall.
McDermott is a stellar example of how interpersonal stuff is just as important to keeping your job as the job itself. Just like Jim Harbaugh in SF (or John Farrell in Boston Red Sox baseball), the required level of success is a lot higher when you’re a total asshole who everyone in the building hates.
Each passing year gives credence to the idea that Joe Namath made a deal with the devil for that super bowl win.
Just popping in to say I hope we’ll get a comic or blog rant about your thoughts on Bill Belichick not being 1st Ballot Hall of Fame
I can squint and see that the controversy from Spygate and Deflategate and other Gategates probably but … with all the other shit the NFL just brushes under the PROFIT$$$ rug, this feels stupid to me.
Also: Jets fans, you’ll get there. Eventually. I hope. I will *always* hate when a team is annually bad and will keep rooting for the teams that are to improve. Maybe next year the Jets will figure some things out! 🙂
“Bill Belichick isn’t a Hall of Famer because he damaged the integrity of the game. And now a word from our sponsor, DraftKings!”
Killshot!
My take is that everyone knows Bill will be back. When he actually retires he’ll get in.
Doesn’t change the fact that he was robbed of a first ballot election, back or not you have to be an idiot to defend that.
I actually feel kinda bad for Bill because his one genuinely endearing quality is he’s a big football nerd under everything else (Exhibit A: Doug Flutie’s dropkick, and don’t try and tell me that wasn’t great). He probably knows more about the HoF than the voters do. The idea of the voters using him as a vehicle to tarnish an institution he cares about more than they do is just kinda sad.
At least I cheer for the Winnipeg Jets and they occasionally win some games; although they’ve typically run into buzz saw teams in the playoffs such as the Dallas Stars or St. Louis Blues or Colorado Avalanche on their way to Cup finals.
I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to follow the NYJ; what kind of dysfunctional generational trauma must a person have to spend money watching these games? At what point could a fan base feasibly force the owner to sell when they’ve been incompetent for so long – it’s a bad look for the NFL for the Bengals, Commanders, Panthers, or Browns to have such idiotic ownership.
I will add, as someone that plans to try to see the Patriots in a few years in person, NY is a much nicer city to explore than a place like Vegas.
Also, HoF voters should all be locked in a room and all made to account for their Belichick vote; what a farce. Bet many of the people saying they voted for him (Polian) couldn’t say that in the room and have the votes properly square up to what happened. Although from the sounds of it Polian can’t even remember who he voted for.
Polian absolutely can remember who he voted for. He’s lying. He didn’t vote for Bill.
Interestingly the hall of fame has released a statement saying any voters who violated committee bylaws may be removed from the committee going forward. I’m guessing they know Polian lobbied against Bill and that’s somehow not allowed.
Fullback…Roger Vick!
They’re paying for Super Bowl III. I still believe that game was fixed in favor of the Jets. Seems like they’ll be paying off the karma for that one until the heat death of the universe.
Or that was the trade off in their deal with Satan.
Karma or deal with the devil… By any religion, the Jets are still in trouble.
I am of the facetious belief that the reason that Joe Namath was only able to make The Guarantee was because he made a deal with the devil. The Jets will only win another Super Bowl once he dies and devil claims his immortal soul. I also think that Jerry Jones made the same Faustian bargain for the Cowboys’ dynasty of the 90s. It would explain why they can’t get past the divisional round.
Nothing takes the sting out of the Dolphins being the Dolphins quite like remembering that the Jets are ALWAYS worse. Frankly, it keeps me going some days.
Hopefully the Seahwaks can win and give the Jets fans the satisfaction of seeing Darnold win and the Pats lose.
