SITE NEWS AND UPDATE
So. This isn’t a post I was hoping to make. As of yesterday, capitalism has come for ya boi, and I (as well as over 400 others) have been laid off from our place of employment as our entire company division was axed. I had my job for 8 years and I was very happy there, so this is extremely disappointing.
To do what I can in the meantime to help my sudden loss of income, I’ve decided to re-open my Patreon account to anyone who wishes to contribute, as well as re-open commissions.
The Draw Play has always been a labor of love for me. I have never truly wanted it to be my main job and outside another period of time a while ago in which I was also unemployed, I have largely resisted monetization and trying to make it my living. I run no ads. I sell no merch. My website is free to read. I, for the most part, did not do commissions. I just want to make silly comics and talk about football to anyone willing to listen. I’m under no illusions that I’m popular enough online to make living off this blog viable without a lot of work, and I knew the instant I made that my focus, I would probably lose part of what makes it possible for me to do this. Having there be no immediate pressure has undoubtedly allowed me to resist burnout for what is now 13 years of very regular updating. I am immensely grateful to everyone who has made viewing my work part of their routine.
But for the time being I’m left with little option to try to at least temporarily make it work. What’s that mean for you? Well, probably only good things. I now have much more free time on my hands and can dedicate more time to this comic. I can spend more time on the comics themselves, I can work on finding ways to improve the site (I know the random comic button is still bugged), I can actually try to make some merch if the demand for any exists (let me know!). I can just make a lot more art in general. I’ve even had a few other ideas percolating for years that I just never had the time to invest into.
Also importantly, I am open to any and all commissions once more. With general life stuff, a full-time job, and my already fairly large commitments to this site, I just never had much time to do other side art that I wasn’t deeply invested in. I’ve got time now. If I have ignored or passed on your request during the last decade, I apologize. It just wasn’t feasible for me at the time, and my email account was being inundated with spam marketing emails so my high filter use may have buried it. You would not believe how many gambling companies will message you to make sponsored posts if you have a public business site. I have updated my email after all this time to make more sense than something I created on a whim ages ago. If you wish to contact me now, it’s thedrawplay@gmail.com.
I do not plan on running ads or making the site pay-to-read. I tried it once ages ago and it was mostly annoying and didn’t actually earn me much. If a sponsor wants to throw a pile of money at me, sure. I’m human. Just be aware that if you are a gambling app, it better be a big pile of money, because I do not gamble, will not gamble, and do not wish to sell gambling to other people. If you see me run a gambling ad be aware I did it for the bag.
If you aren’t a gambling company, I’m all ears. I have a podcast and would be more than willing to sell you.
As for the Patreon: I was not very good about properly utilizing my Patreon last time. With age and seasoning, I plan to do better this go-around. I will be restricting my Discord server to contributors going forward (if you are already a member, you are grandfathered in, but if you are willing to contribute anyway to help the experience and I would certainly appreciate the support). I will make art that I will only post there, and will try to do more personal stuff for members. I will also be far more willing to make your comic ideas and discuss updates and improvements with you.
My intention with all of this is for it to be temporary. I do not wish to stay funemployed forever. I will be attempting to find a new place of work (if you have a lead or need of a social media reputation/content specialist, or something related to making art or sportswriting, hit me up). If and when I do find a steady job again and it impedes my ability to produce for the Patreon, I will de-activate it once more. I do not know how long this may take for now, thanks to *gestures at everything.*
I will keep this post up for this week so that people aren’t likely to miss it and so I can use the time to get some personal things in order now that I have been thrust into a stressful new place.
Thank you dearly to everyone who reads this silly site that I’ve spent so many years on. I appreciate you more than you know. I love recognizing all the names in the comments and various followers on social media. I am immensely privileged to have even a small subset of readers who care about what I make. This might be an uncertain time for me, but I want to take this chance to make this little project of mine grow.
May Football Chaos Reign,
Dave
The update is mysterious and important!
Dave is going to become the minority owner of the NY Giants. They offered him free medium Pepsis for life, for the low low price of around $700 million or so.
New York Giants, the balls in your court. Just 1% ownership and the ability to overrule the GM and coach once per season.
Hello Dave,
I’m writing to you from Germany. I’ve been a big fan of your art for a few years now and look forward to the latest comics every week. To me, you really are a great artist with a wonderful sense of humor.
I wish you all the best for the future! And hopefully you can keep working on your site.
Good luck on the search. Your whole division getting axed is a crappy way to be shown the door.
Brutal news, man. Hope you’re able to find a new gig quickly. Thanks for all the laughs over the years! I’ve been here ever since my Bills traded for LeSean McCoy and I haven’t missed a comic since.
Same thing happened to me in 2021. “Thanks for the past 17 years and getting us past the Pandemic, Redshirt. Here’s a check for you PTO pay and get out!” My father got laid off after nearly 25 years. Within three months, we both had better jobs for better pays.
Good things happen to good people. If this website is a small shadow of your creativity, you are a valued asset that anyone would be lucky to have. Good luck and may your former employers soon follow you out the door.
Merch is a fun idea! I’m not sure what design I’d ask for just yet, but tshirts are pretty promising (esp if you find somebody who sells in sizes up to 3X or 4X). Maybe fridge magnets? Idk.
Sorry to hear about the job mess, but good luck moving forward! I’m sure I’m not the only one willing to toss a couple bucks your way sometimes.
I’m so sorry to hear this. Everyone is cheering for your success.
I’m sorry to hear about you getting laid off. I have 2 good friends who have been laid off in the last 2 months as well and I have heard many companies are planning layoffs soon. Isn’t the economy great ?
Maybe setup a Paypal account and put the link on your page ?
I wouldn’t mind sending some shekels your way for you to create a couple of Jaguar comics.
Check the right sidebar! There should be a Paypal donate button right there.
Dave that stinks to hear that happened. Hope you find something else enjoyable soon.
As for merch, I think you could do quite well as most of us would support you over the greed that is the shield/NFL owners. Perhaps funny team shirts (the Browns hydra/factory of sadness or Horse Elway for examples).
The Draw Playtreon
Best of luck with the job search, I would totally give you an interview if you were up in my (Seahawk land) area. I really appreciate your art and have been one of those who made you a part of my routine.
Shit, Dave. Sorry to hear that. Best of luck/skill in finding something new and better.
Too bad the NFL would never let you sell your “Tee in a Cup” shirts. I’m sure there’d be a decent market for them…
Dave, I’ve never commented on one of your comics before, but I’ve been lurking for years and have your comic prominently bookmarked and ALWAYS look forward to your take on the NFL. Anytime there’s something crazy in the League my first thought is ‘Oooooo I hope Dave does a comic about this’.
I wish nothing but the best for you and your family, and I hope this turns out to be the catalyst for something far greater for you and for this site.
Good luck, and fuck the Browns.
I’d buy the “DO CRIME” hoodie, or Vince Wilfork’s “MEAT” t-shirt.
I was wondering hard about why you’d drawn yourself as Oscar, when only the drawing was up with no further detailed post. Now it makes sense.
Oh man! I’m so sorry to hear that Dave. Doubly so since you say you were happy at your old job.
Hope your search for a new job goes well, so you can get your life stabilized ASAP.
And, you know what, get an even better job! Show those no-good profit-chasers that firing you only made you stronger! NFL guys can do that, you can too!
Thanks for your comics and written insights about chaos! Today I particularly enjoyed your creative word “funemployed” 😉
Sucks for the company to have fired you and I hope you find something even better kinda like your grouchy Alter Ego that you drew (in a brees?): https://youtu.be/KErsmWDigNQ?feature=shared
Sorry to hear Dave. I hope you’re able to find another job soon!
Definitely merch. I’d buy the shit out of your memes (can we call them memes if they’re inside jokes?…whatever).
Happened to me a few years back, then found out a week later my wife was pregnant with our 3rd kid. You’re a super talented guy, I’m sure you’ll find something even in this shit job market.
As someone who’s been in that boat for a year, I’m wishing you far better luck than I’ve had (and a new employer with actual loyalty too).
We love you Dave. Good luck with everything
Nothing can quite match the gut punch of being told you’re being laid off. I hope you can find work quickly, but with things the way they are I’m glad you have a side hustle. We’re pulling for you.
Damn I wasn’t expecting a somber update. Keep your head up Dave.
I’m sure that doing paid commissions on work would be a great way to promote yourself. Now I’m not suggesting that you end up drawing pictures of Sexy Rexy and Eli making out to pay the bills, but I’m not not suggesting that.
So sorry man, hope it all works out
I’m so sorry that happened to you
To be honest, even if your website had ads, I’d still visit. Servers can be expensive, and many other webcomics have ads as well.
Youre awesome Dave, and you’ll get through this. We’re rooting for you.
I feel the exact same way. Sell ads. Most of us have adblockers anyway, so why not let someone pay you to do what you do so well??
I’m so thankful you’re not going to stop making art for this site. I regularly read it (might be one of the few female NFL fans that does) and have been since around 2015. You’ve even inspired me to make my own silly little illustrations related to the NFL! Although I don’t plan on regularly posting them until I’ve already made a lot of them, making silly NFL-related artwork has become a passion of mine lately. I hope I can share some of them with you soon. I’m so sorry that you got laid off and I hope you can find steady work again soon.
