Kluwe plays Pokemon

First things first: Chris Kluwe was not cut because of his activism, and people need to stop thinking so. Kluwe himself suggested it, and the Governor of Minnesota also seemed to suggest it. Kluwe did not get cut because he champions Gay Rights. The media just wants that to be true so they publish it anyway. No NFL team would be dumb enough to actually cut a player for activism on a hot button topic, the blowback would be astounding. But since Kluwe has been vocal this year, and he just got cut, people are just combining the two because it’s convenient and sensational.

To summarize that article, Kluwe is fine at kicking the ball deep, but his directional punting is weak, and the new punter, Jeff Locke, is known for his directional ability. The Vikings also saved some quality dough in the process. The Vikings have been overhauling their special teams for a couple years and Kluwe is just the most recent casualty. The cold, calculating business side of sports got to Kluwe, not prejudice. Kluwe has a fine gig as a blogger/nerd hero, so he’ll be fine. From what I can tell, the Vikings cut him this early so that he can find another team before the season starts.

The Geno Smith Redemption

I should probably stop picking on the Jets so much.

Anyway, as anyone who watched the draft knows, Geno took a tumble on draft day all the way to the second round. I felt really bad for the guy, but he was probably drafted where he should have been. Geno has potential but he hasn’t quite pulled it all together yet and he probably should sit for a year or so to learn the NFL before he gets the job. That said, watching the poor guy lose out on millions on live television on his mothers birthday was hard to watch. Especially when Buffalo took project QB EJ Manuel, who is probably less ready than Geno.

But the Jets actually played the draft pretty well, getting their QB as well as a Revis replacement and some more talent. But if I were Geno, I’d be leery about going into that situation. Rex Ryan’s job is so close to finished I can’t believe he survived the offseason firings, and usually when a team fires a GM the coach goes with him, or at least follows suit soon after (See Lovie Smith). So unless the Jets make the playoffs or better this year, Ryan is likely gone. If I was a young QB this wouldn’t be my dream situation. I hope the Jets stick the corpse of Garrard out there as the starter and give Geno some time to learn before throwing him to the flames, I don’t think Geno is quite ready to pilot the Jets quite yet. (Ho ho ho)

Of course there is always the chance Geno could take the team on his back and become the hero. We never really know what will happen do we?

Fan hypocrisy

For as much as I give Goodell crap for being a big ol juicy hypocrite, it’s not like we fans are guilt free. We can be just as bad sometimes. Some people’s mental gymnastics can be quite incredible. I see it on game day, when people yell at the refs for “blowing an obvious call” but then talk about how right the refs got it when they call a player on the other team, even if both penalties are crap or good calls. I also see it when it comes to defending players on “your” team. When he’s a player on your team, he’s alright, and he’s just maligned, everyone else doesn’t get it. He’s not dirty, he’s just a hard hitter! But if he’s on the other team, he’s the worst player in the world and a dirty piece of crap. It’s stupid, and it annoys me. Just because he’s on your team doesn’t make him wonderful, and just because he’s not, or he hurt your player, doesn’t make him evil. You can have assholes on your team, you just have to accept it. I watched Brandon Jacobs mouth off and be a jerk for years on the Giants. I’m thankful for how he helped us, but the guy was a jerk. Watching him throw tantrums on the 49ers was pretty funny.

Regarding James Harrison specifically, I’ve never been a fan of his play style (he spears and leads with the head too much instead of going for good tackles). But I don’t hate him like a lot of fans do. He’s had some bad hits but he was also Roger Goodell’s designated league “boogyman” for a while, being used as an example and being hyper scrutinized. He’s since been replaced by Suh, the new boogyman. But Ed Reed goes for the head all the time, and he never gets hung out to dry as the bad guy. He was almost punished last year, only to have his suspension reduced to a cheap fine. But I’m sure you’d have plenty of Ravens fans arguing that he’s totally clean and squeaky in the same breath that they curse Harrison.

It’s annoying but I guess it’s just something we have to deal with.
